The conclusion we made from this conversation was that the main character, acted by an older person, will be shown running in various locations. He could possibly be hearing voices and having hallucinations of his dead daughter to portray his schizophrenic mental disorde, but at this point in time we are not sure if this will fit the crime genre. As the main character is running, there will be posters and signs that would be seen in such a location with the credits displayed. At the end of the title sequence, the main character is shown holding a gun and the man chasing him is also hlding a gun. At this moment, the screen blacks and we hear a gun shot with the title appearing on a black screen, leaving the audience in serspence.

For my further look at opening sequences I decided to look at ‘Reservoir Dogs’. I chose to look at this as it follows the conventions of a crime film, linking with our genre. The opening shot shows us a group of people sitting around a table talking about the meaning behind the song ‘About a virgin’. This straight away grabs the audience’s attention and appeals to the target audience by making them laugh. It is clear that Quentin Tarantino had a definite audience in mind, which consists of mainly males. This opening scene therefore apples to a male audience because it shows and creates a male bonding.
All the characters are wearing black suits and ties. This modern gangster look was not a huge convention at the time and had rarely been seen before, but instead arguably set the convention of this dress code for future films and played a huge inspiration on our film. The camera revolving around the table rather then giving us a establishing shot of the café or the gang sitting around the table, immediately immerses us within the conversation and therefore film, setting up questions from the start such as who are these people?
Both the dress code and the way that the men are acting and talking hold this ‘cool’ feel to it and this helps to get a male audience to show a positive response. The downside to all these elements, such as the film starting in mid conversation and setting up new genre conventions, are that some audience members seeing this film for the first time, especially in 1992 when it was released, might feel confused and alienated.
When they leave the café a title screen appears and a radio presenter kicks in. We then see the gang walking down the street with the non-dietetic sound of 70’s music playing. This music, the slow motion scene and the yellow titles give the film a 70’s exploitation crime feel to it.

Watching the interview with Karl Cooper i found a few things that will help improve our title scene. Firstly the title scene is an art form and is there to get an audience excited for the film as well as set an expectation. This means we have to think about pace, music and typography. The typography must be cleverly used and interestingly Incorporated with the title sequence.
This means we must take into consideration the background and where we will place the typography.
The two clips also showed me how importan the title sequence is to a film, as it sets the tone and gets the audience involeved. If this dosn't work then it will be harder to reach our target audence.this means we must make sure the audio and visual codes relate to our genre.

Looking at multiple websites and sources, to gain more accurate results, I researched what were the most popular genres of the decade
As you can see from my research Drama was the most popular genre of the decade.
Then as a group we created our own questionnaire
We gave out 17 questionnaires and the results we received back were varied. Out of the 17 people who answer our questionnaires 8 of them were in the 11-20 age range. This age range's most popular film genre was either a comedy or a musical. The majority of the people in this age range said they enjoyed this genre because they have interesting storylines that they can relate too. The people in this age group said their least favorite film genre was war and sci-fi. The people we asked also told us that they attend the cinema once a month or rarely and would all go with friends rather then alone. Because most of the people in this age group said that comedy was their favored genre, 11-20 will properly not be our target audience.
The next age range was 21-40. The people in this age group said that their favored, and most popular genre of film in this category was action and mystery, generally because it keeps them interested and takes them away from their regular life. They expect the title sequence to include an introduction to the film as well as presenting the names of cast and crew. The least favorite film genre overall is rom-com for mails and horror for females. This audience told us that they tend to go to the cinema once a month with friends.
`
The final age range we asked was 41. This category were split on their favorite genre between thriller and musicals telling us that they like musicals because they are they are cheerful, with good entertainment value and they like thriller due to its compelling story line. This audience generally expects the same things in an opening sequence as the 21-40 year olds.

Because both 21-40 and 41+ said they enjoyed mystery and thriller, and films in the crime genre generally hold the same quality’s as both these genres, we will be targeting our film at a 21- middle age audience, in order to gain the widest audience.
